鈥婼AN JOSE, CA 鈥� At 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, the Santa Clara County Board of Education will interview five candidates to fill the current vacancy for Board Trustee Area 2.
- Allison Becker is a former teacher as well as a former Teach for America corps member. Ms. Becker has seven years of classroom experience in three different types of school settings including a traditional public school, a charter school, and a private school focusing on students with learning differences. Ms. Becker previously worked as a testing coordinator and math and literacy instructor in the middle grades crafting technology-centered lessons, spearheading new assessment technology, and preparing and presenting multiple professional development series.
- Kathleen King is the Chief Executive Officer of the Healthier Kids Foundation and former CEO for the Santa Clara Family Health Foundation. She was the Technology Business Executive for Applied Materials, Inc. for 19 years. Ms. King has held elective office as city council member and mayor of the City of Saratoga. She has served as a Board member for several organizations including the Dental Board of California, The Housing Trust, and Santa Clara Valley Medical Foundation. She was the founder and chairman of Silicon Valley Children's Hospital Foundation, and founder of the Saratoga-Monte Sereno Community Foundation. She was recognized with the Community Builder PACT Award in 2012, the "Citizen of the Year" Award by the Santa Clara Medical Association in 2011, and named "Woman of the Year" by Senate District 13 in 2010.
- John Mumy is the parent of a middle school student and an active classroom volunteer since 2005. He has been an active community advocate since 2007 and involved in community organizations such as the Luther Burbank Community Association, the Lakewood Village Neighborhood Association, Civil Air Patrol, Girl Scouts of Northern California, San Jose Dance Theatre, and Los Gatos Ballet. Mr. Mumy states that, "as a servant to the community he is open to all sides of the argument and not afraid to speak out in the advocacy of what is in the best interest of the community rather than special interests."
- Naomi Nakano-Matsumoto, LCSW is currently the Director of Housing for YWCA Silicon Valley. She has been a social worker for over 30 years and has over 25 years of nonprofit executive management experience with expertise in diversity, equity and inclusion work, and advocacy. Ms. Nakano-Matsumoto is an active volunteer and board member of several community organizations. She is currently the Director of Midori Kai, Inc. of Silicon Valley and is a volunteer with Homestead High School PTSA, Correctional Institutions Chaplaincy, and the Girl Scouts. She was previously appointed to the Santa Clara County Commission on the Status of Women and the Santa Clara County Housing and Community Development Advisory Committee. In 2015 Ms. Nakano-Matsumoto was recognized with the "Legacy Award," in 2013 she was named "Community Impact Honoree" by the Asian Law Association, and in 2009 was named "Woman of the Year" by State Senator Joe Simitian.
- Gilbert Wong is a business owner with a background in business management and financial real estate and a community leader with two-terms of experience as the Mayor of Cupertino. Mr. Wong currently serves as a school board trustee for the Foothill-De Anza Community College District and was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the Association of Community College Trustees. Mr. Wong is a native of Santa Clara County, graduated from Santa Clara County public schools, and has had his two children attend school in the Cupertino and Fremont Union High school districts.
The Area 2 seat will be a provisional appointment which will run until the term of office expires in November 2018.
