â¶Ä‹SAN JOSE, CA – On Wednesday, January 15, the Santa Clara County Board of Education adopted a resolution advocating against legislative diversions of property taxes raised for education. This resolution, advocates for the protection of property taxes currently raised for public schools and urges leaders to stop any effects to further divert property tax allocation away from schools.
“By signing this resolution, the Santa Clara County Board of Education states their belief that property tax raised for education be maintained for education, rather than re-allocated to non-education entities," stated County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Mary Ann Dewan.
Currently, California spends a regional cost adjusted $10,281 per student, 20-percent lower than the national average of $12,756. The resolution urges leaders to repair a series of cuts to education funding dating back as far as 1978.
The resolution asks state officials to add a regional cost supplement to the Local Control Funding Formula in high-cost counties with excess education revenue augmentation, increase the allocation of property tax to Special Education, reverse historical diversions and increase the transparency of local property taxes allocation to education.
