SAN JOSE, CA – Three Head Start program sites have been selected to participate in the UCLA, Johnson & Johnson Health Care Institute, and the National Center on Health's Innovative Health Literacy Improvement Program.
Families receiving Head Start services from the Hollister, Rouleau, and Wool Creek locations will receive important information to not only improve children's overall health and school attendance but to empower parents to make more informed decisions about their child's oral health.
This program is based on "What to Do for Healthy Teeth," an easy to understand and culturally sensitive book series. The books aim to improve oral health with an emphasis on disease prevention, promoting oral health, and improving oral health literacy, while drawing attention to the connection between nutrition and oral health, and oral health's link to overall health and well-being.
This training can assist in reducing oral health issues such as difficulties in eating and speaking, difficulties in focusing and learning, and even reduce feelings of shame and fear of smiling. Additionally, this program can help children to avoid missing school due to tooth pain and reduce the burden on our healthcare system as a result of unnecessary ER visits.
- Hollister Site Event: 9 a.m., Monday, October 8
- Rouleau Site Event: 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 10
- Wool Creek Event: 8:30 a.m., Monday, October 15
