鈥婼AN JOSE, CA 鈥 After approximately three hours of spelling, two Santa Clara County students were named as the 2023 California State champions.
Eighth-grader Vikrant Chintanaboina from Discovery Charter School - Falcon Campus and seventh-grader Shradha Rachamreddy from BASIS Independent Silicon Valley Upper School were announced as Junior High Spelling Bee co-champions. The students were announced as co-champions after exhausting an extensive list of words on May 13 at the California State Spelling Bee championships held in Stockton.
鈥淎 big congratulations to them both for their determination and dedication to challenging their competitors and themselves,鈥 said County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Mary Ann Dewan. 鈥淲e look forward to seeing their accomplishments at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. All of Santa Clara County is rooting for them.鈥
Separate from the state spelling bee, both Vikrant and Shradha will compete at the 94th Scripps National Spelling Bee. As experienced spellers, they will return to Scripps to compete against 229 other spellers nationwide.
Vikrant competed in 2022 tying for 49th place and in 2019 tying for 51st place. Shradha returns after having tied in 2022 for 23rd place and in 2019 for 51st place.
