鈥淜ey stakeholders interested in elevating the participation of youth and residents in civics, civil discourse, and involvement in our shared democratic processes," stated County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Mary Ann Dewan.
鈥淓ncouraging local communities to participate in civic engagement activities is essential to help youth become aware of current issues and events that impact their world. Studies indicate that students who volunteer are more likely to feel connected to their communities, thrive in school, and are less likely to engage in risky conduct," she added.
The event featured a keynote address by the Honorable Supervisor Cindy Chavez, District 2, County of Santa Clara about the Women's Equality 2020 effort. Other notable speakers included Shannon Bushey from the Registrar of Voters and a youth voice panel featuring students from throughout the county.
鈥淚 want to encourage everyone, especially our local districts, to assess the levels of civic engagement opportunities that are available. Civic opportunities are for every student at every level and that the most crucial element of this initiative is giving a voice to our youth," added Dewan.
