The 2018 awardees are:
I-Heng McComb
Fremont Union High School District
Subjects Taught: Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics
"I didn't like math in high school because I didn't see the point of what we were learning and didn't enjoy the way we were learning it. I want my students' experience to be better than my own. I survey my students about their motivations for learning math and am careful to be inclusive when talking about why we're learning what we're learning. I choose a variety of contexts and applications to show how math can be used in many areas of life," stated McComb.
Charlotte Kruk
Fremont Union High School District
Subjects Taught: 3D Design, Levels 1-3
"From day one I strive to foster a mindset of growth. Students hear consistent messages that no matter what skills they entered with if they continually invest themselves, improvement is not only possible but probable. My ultimate goal in teaching is to create a space where students feel appreciated, respected and at peace no matter what their aptitude is with the media. I need everyone to feel safe taking a risk toward the outcome of self-betterment," stated Kruk.
Judy Zaccheo
Oak Grove School District
Subjects Taught: Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Elective
"My students know that they have a voice and a choice. As much as possible I let them decide or determine how they will show their learning or understanding at the end of a unit or research topic. I think knowing they have some power and control over their learning is extremely reaffirming to them and inspires them to want to work harder and do their best," stated Zaccheo.
Sarah Jacobs
Alum Rock Union School District
Subjects Taught: Computer Literacy, English
"I love teaching technology and how it can help bring people together and make the world a better place if you use it properly. Bringing technology into literacy helps evolve that understanding even more, and technology allows for incredible global connections," stated Jacobs.
Leo Florendo
Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District
Subjects Taught: Digital Media 1 & 2
"Sharing creative techniques with technology to students so they can express themselves in multiple mediums such as music, websites, videos, animation, graphic design, augmented reality is fun for my students and me," stated Florendo.â¶Ä‹
