SAN JOSE, CA 鈥� Dr. Gary Waddell has been selected as Assistant Superintendent for the 老澳门开奖结果 (老澳门开奖结果). He will start with the county office on Monday, November 19. In his new position, Dr. Waddell will oversee work in public affairs and lead 老澳门开奖结果 initiatives focused on leadership, equity, and educational progress.
"I am confident that Dr. Waddell's wide range of experience will increase, enhance and expand our educational services for schools in our county," said County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary Ann Dewan. "His leadership and experience is a critical piece of supporting our schools in their efforts to close the achievement gap."
Dr. Waddell most recently served as the Deputy Superintendent of the San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE). He formerly served as Associate Superintendent of Instruction and Curriculum Administrator at SMCOE.
"Throughout my career, I have been committed to providing students with rigorous learning opportunities, to working with teams to ensure equity and access for all students, and positively impacting school communities in the interest of effectively serving all children and youth," said Dr. Waddell. "I look forward to working alongside staff, schools, and the community to positively impact the students of Santa Clara County, their schools and districts. I understand the critical importance of honoring the exemplary work already underway across the county, building the capacity of others, and providing high-quality support to schools and districts."
Dr. Waddell holds a Doctorate in School Leadership as well as a Master's Degree in School Counseling, an Educational Specialist Degree in School Administration, and a Bachelor's degree in Drama. Dr. Waddell has been an award-winning School Principal where he led schools in equity work and drastically reduced the achievement gap while simultaneously raising the achievement of all students. He has also been an advocate for quality preschool programs throughout his career. During his leadership of the Instructional Services Division at the San Mateo County Office of Education, he led teams that launched a number of innovative initiatives such as the San Mateo County STEM Center, the Center for Learning Analytics, environmental education initiative, among a host of others.
Gary is a former Chair of California's Curriculum and Instruction Steering Committee (CISC) where he worked alongside the California Department of Education, the State Board of Education, and County Offices of Education throughout California to implement educational policy. He currently serves as the Chair of the statewide Visual and Performing Arts Subcommittee.
Gary has published on topics such as professional learning communities and teacher preparation. He is a graduate of the Friday Center at UNC-Chapel Hill's Principals' Executive Program (PEP), where he was honored with the Jack McCall Award for his leadership. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his achievements in human rights, an area in which he has been recognized for innovative programs that highlight diversity and inclusiveness in schools.
Originally from North Carolina, Gary was recognized as the statewide Elementary Counselor of the Year and, early in his career, as the statewide Outstanding New Professional. He was recognized in 2017 with a Star Award from the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association for his statewide curriculum leadership.
