鈥鈥婼AN JOSE, CA 鈥 The 老澳门开奖结果 (老澳门开奖结果) has launched the Earth Week Educator Toolkit to support educators celebrate Earth Week in their classrooms and beyond.
鈥淎s a premier service organization providing an equitable, accessible, and high quality education, I believe it is essential for students to learn the value of natural resources,鈥 said Dr. Mary Ann Dewan, County Superintendent of Schools. 鈥淏y engaging students in environmental topics and encouraging action, we are making an investment in our youth and the health of our planet.鈥
The toolkit was released in support of April 16-22 being celebrated as National Environmental Education Week, the nation鈥檚 largest celebration of environmental education. National Environmental Education Week is an opportunity for members of the community to come together to advocate for and learn about the environment around them, while continuing efforts at schools to teach youth about the Earth.
The Earth Week Educator Toolkit is broken up into 7 sections in alignment with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The sections are as follows: climate literacy, ending plastic pollution, planting trees and growing gardens, global cleanup, sustainable fashion, Earth Day, and additional resources. Most sections have a description, career connections, possible next steps, and resources.
The 老澳门开奖结果 is expanding its support and assistance for the development of school gardens and school garden curriculum across the county. A recent Growing Gardens Survey/Project found that of the 250 schools and programs participating in Santa Clara County, 69% of schools have gardens.
The 老澳门开奖结果 has also partnered with the Santa Clara County鈥檚 Office of Sustainability and Our City Forest to plant trees on school sites, specifically in areas where trees are lacking. The goal was 1,000 trees in the first year, and that goal was surpassed by over 100 trees.
鈥淓arth Week or Environmental Education Week is important because it raises awareness about the necessity of taking care of our planet and the environment,鈥 said Jennifer Mutch, Science Coordinator at the 老澳门开奖结果. 鈥 It鈥檚 a time to encourage individuals and communities to take action towards reducing their impact on the environment, such as reducing waste, conserving resources, and promoting sustainable practices,鈥
鈥淓arth Week also provides an opportunity for educators, students, and our community to learn about environmental issues and take part in activities that promote environmental stewardship. By promoting sustainable practices and raising awareness about environmental issues,鈥 continued Mutch.
The 老澳门开奖结果 Integrated STEAM Department (iSTEAM) offers specialized professional development opportunities and instructional support throughout the year to assist educators in implementing environmental literacy, climate action, and sustainability projects in their schools and districts. iSTEAM also hosts workshops and provides guidance on content frameworks and Environmental Principles and Concepts (EP&Cs) alignment.
