SAN JOSE, CA – On Thursday, May 24, Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San Jose) and Senator Jim Beall (D-San Jose) announced their intent to request an audit of the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District. The state audit request will focus on allegations of fiscal impropriety, potential conflicts of interest, both ethically and legally, and overall governance, specifically by the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District (ARUESD) Board of Trustees.
This request follows a November 2016 audit conducted by the Fiscal Crisis & Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) which concluded there is sufficient evidence that fraud or misappropriation of funds may have occurred. ÀϰÄÃÅ¿ª½±½á¹û (ÀϰÄÃÅ¿ª½±½á¹û) requested the initial audit following an anonymous allegation that DelTerra Real Estate Services, Inc., fraudulently billed the ARUESD for construction and program management services.
Dr. Mary Ann Dewan, County Superintendent of Schools, stated "I have a moral and legal obligation to look after the children's needs in the districts in Santa Clara County. I have taken all necessary steps to work with the Board of Trustees of Alum Rock Union Elementary School District to implement the recommendations of the FCMAT audit. I welcome the request by Assemblymember Kalra and Senator Beall for the State Auditor to conduct an audit and investigate these unresolved matters in the areas of governance, fiscal and facility that threaten the fiscal stability of the district."
The County Office of Education and the County Board of Education's advocacy on behalf of students and communities serves to promote equity throughout the county.
"As the County Board of Education Trustee for Area 6, it is my responsibility to help ensure that the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District is able to appropriately serve the students and community within its boundaries. I appreciate this effort to ensure strong accountability and fidelity in the district," said Trustee Darcie Green.
"I am proud of the leadership of Dr. Dewan in conducting oversight of the school district and her efforts to work with Alum Rock to help provide stability for their students and community. I am grateful for the action taken by Senator Beall and Assemblymember Kalra, " commented President Rosemary Kamei, Santa Clara County Board of Education.
