The parties decided that it was in the best interest of students, staff, and the community to begin transitioning leadership in a manner that ensures a continued focus on student achievement.
On November 8, 2017, the Board announced that the parties entered into an agreement that allows the Superintendent to pursue other professional interests, and permits the Board to begin the search for a new Superintendent.
"The Board and Mr. Gundry have entered into the agreement believing it is in their respective best interests as well as in the best interests of the County Office of Education," said Board President Dr. Michael Chang.
Board members thanked Superintendent Gundry for his leadership during his three-year tenure. Under Superintendent Gundry's leadership, the County Office has increased opportunities for students to complete high school by launching Opportunity Youth Academy ("OYA"), secured significant grant funding for data usage, and supported expansion for technology infrastructure, teacher training and certification, and academic and school climate support.
Closing the achievement gap and equity were high priorities for Superintendent Gundry. He focused on increasing access to high-quality preschool to ensure students were kindergarten-ready by opening Educare of Silicon Valley, launching the Strong Start Coalition to advocate for early learning, and the Early Learning Pilot Program to make preschool more accessible for local families.
"I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the Board, my staff and the community for their support of the County's programs and services during my tenure. I am confident that the County Office will continue to set a high standard for educational leadership in the Bay Area," said Superintendent Gundry.
He further stated he is proud that learning opportunities for all students, particularly those in Alternative Education, increased over the last three years.
Superintendent Gundry was appointed by the Board of Education in July 2014. He previously served as the Superintendent of the Pasadena Unified School District.
