鈥婼AN JOSE, CA 鈥� After 15 rounds, Aziza Mohammed, a sixth-grade student from Granada Islamic School in Santa Clara County emerged victorious in this year's spelling competition.
She bested 54 fourth-through sixth-grade students from 28 counties at the California State Elementary Spelling Bee hosted by the San Joaquin County Office of Education where students faced-off in a round-style competition, students were eliminated when they misspell a word.
This year, the winning word was "camaraderie."
The state's top four spellers also include Rishik Gandhasri of Silver Oak Elementary, in Santa Clara County a sixth grader who took fourth place. Both Gandhasri and Mohammed qualified for the state competition after competing in the Santa Clara County Spelling Bee.
"Spelling Bees provide a great opportunity for students and their families and surrounding community to work together to help their children develop their knowledge and confidence as they compete in a supportive environment," stated County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Mary Ann Dewan.
Santa Clara County Board of Education will honor Mohammed and her family on June 13.
