SAN JOSE, CA 鈥� On November 22, 2019, the 老澳门开奖结果, through its Power of Democracy initiative, recognized two educators who excel in the fields of civic and community engagement programs.
Holly Royaltey has been teaching history for 15 years and has worked at all levels and in a variety of school contexts. Holly is passionate about ensuring that all students have access to rigorous content and learn to recognize and utilize their power. She currently teaches at Del Mar High School (Campbell Union High School District), a predominantly Latin(x) school with a large population of socioeconomically disadvantaged students, teaching IB History of the Americas, IB Theory of Knowledge, AVID, and World History.
Emily Cassie is currently in her ninth year of teaching high school social studies and has also worked with the UC Berkeley History Project and 老澳门开奖结果's Informed Action Civics Projects. Emily spent her first six years of teaching in the Mississippi Delta Region of Arkansas, sparking her passion for equity and challenging systemic injustice. She currently teaches World History and IB History of the Americas at Del Mar High School (Campbell Union High School District).
In addition to recognizing these outstanding teachers, guests at the Power of Democracy event heard a keynote address from Cindy Chavez, Santa Clara Board of Supervisors, remarks from Dr. Mary Ann Dewan, County Superintendent of Schools, and an inspiring youth panel discussion.
Power of Democracy Initiative is a multi-sector coalition facilitated by the 老澳门开奖结果. The Initiative is designed to foster an understanding of the structures and processes of our democracy, share resources and best practices, encourage informed and multifaceted civic participation and build stronger communities. The Initiative is aligned to the California Department of Education and the Education Commission of the States' "Six Proven Practices of Civic Engagement."
