鈥嬧赌婼AN JOSE, CA 鈥� At its annual organizational meeting on December 14, the Santa Clara County Board of Education (SCCBOE) elected Dr. Michael Chang as president for the coming year. Rosemary Kamei was elected vice president. Both were 6-0 votes (one absence). Outgoing President Anna Song was presented with a plaque that included a gavel in honor of her year of service.
鈥婦r. Chang is a faculty member, department chairman, and founder of the Asian Pacific American Leadership Institute at De Anza College. He was first elected to the Santa Clara County Board of Education in 2010 to represent Trustee Area 2 and was re-elected in 2014. He has been a West Valley resident for more than 30 years and served successfully in local public offices since 1991, including two-terms as mayor of Cupertino and on the city council.
Rosemary Kamei was first appointed to the Board in May 2015 to fill the vacant Area 3 seat, and then was elected to a four-year term in November. She is the executive director of Building Futures Now, an after-school and summer school program serving students from fourth grade through college in East Palo. Kamei previously served as the Development Director at the Silicon Valley Education Foundation and as a director of the Santa Clara County Valley Water District for 17 years. She has also served as an adjunct professor at San Jose State University.
Earlier in the evening, Kamei, along with Joseph Di Salvo, Grace Mah, and Anna Song were sworn in as members of the SCCBOE. In November, Di Salvo, Mah, and Song were re-elected as trustees from Area 4, Area 1, and Area 5, respectively. County Superintendent of Schools Jon R. Gundry presided over the ceremony in which the oath of office was administered to all four board members by their respective guests. (Watch the video of the ceremony鈥�.)
The board also adopted its calendar of meetings for 2017. The Board typically meets at 5 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month with only one meeting in January, July, and December in 2017.
